Barndominium Interior Decor Inspiration in Iowa

At Koskovich and Murphy Developments we take pride in the number of options we offer when it comes to barndominium homes in Iowa. But we’re also aware that there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. After all, with so many ideas to sift through and options to pick for your custom home, you might be downright intimidated when it comes to adding barndominium interior ideas to the mix. So let’s cut this down to size.

Barndominium 101

We’ve already assembled a helpful guide to barndominiums, where we discuss the advantages of post-frame buildings. If you’d rather have the short version, here it is: barndominiums rely on their outer walls for support, which means minimal interior support and no need for structural walls like you’d find in a traditional stick-built home. You can have as many interior walls as you’d like, but the point is you don’t have to have them; a barndominium is ideal for the light, airy feel that comes with an open floor plan.

Finding Inspiration For Your Barndominium Interior

If you think that sounds flexible, you don’t know the half of it. Your home is a blank canvas that can take on nearly any shape you want. That also gives you a lot of choices when it comes to how you approach interior design. While we draw on our experience as general post-frame contractors serving the Sioux City Metro area, the real fun starts at move-in day when you’re making your house a home. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Functionality

Each room in your home will have a purpose. There are some essentials—nobody wants to do without bedrooms, a spacious kitchen, a dining area, and a living room—but you may also decide to incorporate a home office, a dedicated laundry room, a home theater, or a space for your creative activities. Knowing how you’ll use your home will dictate architectural decisions and decor alike.

Lighting

We deliver structures in move-in-ready condition. While one of the advantages of post-frame construction is the opportunity for plenty of windows—and, therefore, ample natural light—you’ll still want to consider the kinds of lighting you want for each room.

Finishes

Wood, either bare or with a stain or clear-coat finish, is popular in barndominiums. It’s not confined to exposed rafters, either; shiplap is a staple of the style, and it has a timeless look. But you can also complement this with paint if you don’t want a home that’s too rustic. The use of different colors, or accent walls, can make even small spaces look bigger. Strategic use of color and items like area rugs can also help give different areas within an open floor plan their own distinct identities.

Styles

Maybe you love a traditional look that complements the rustic or farmhouse style. On the other hand, maybe you like a touch of modernism, whether it’s Mid-Century Modern as seen on Mad Men, the clean lines of Danish modern, or the combination of simplicity and warmth that can even be found in some Ikea furniture.

On the other hand, not everyone likes a uniform, matched look. And we’d be the first to admit that there’s something to be said for eclecticism. You can choose different themes for different rooms. Or you can mix and match styles even within rooms, either finding styles that complement each other (the simplicity of line that’s found in Mission, Arts and Crafts, and Quaker furniture each blend well, for example) or simply following your muse wherever she leads, combining styles, colors, and textures for something as unique as you are!

Flow

You don’t need to believe in Feng Shui to take full advantage of its underlying principle: your home should have a logic and flow to it, even if that flow is only apparent to you (you live here, after all). That can mean choosing a layout and appliances that help keep your kitchen efficient, looking ahead to aging in place, or simply paying close attention to room layouts so they’re easy to navigate and don’t look cluttered.
